A Rich History

In the early 1900s, Samuel Untermyer, a prominent lawyer and civic leader, envisioned a garden that blended classical European and Persian influences. Collaborating with architect William W. Bosworth, Untermyer developed a series of themed gardens, fountains, and sculptures that were considered among the finest in the United States. The Walled Garden, inspired by Indo-Persian designs, features a canal system, fountains, and a Grecian-style amphitheater adorned with sphinxes atop Ionic columns. The Temple of the Sky, a circular colonnade, offers panoramic views of the Hudson River and the Palisades.

After Untermyer's death in 1940, the estate faced neglect and vandalism. However, in 1946, the City of Yonkers accepted 16 acres of the property, marking the beginning of its transformation into a public park. In 1974, Untermyer Gardens was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and since 2011, the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy has led extensive restoration efforts.
