Retaining walls are an essential component of any landscaping project. They can serve a functional purpose, such as holding back a slope of land from slumping or sliding down the side of a hill.

Retaining walls also have aesthetic purposes. They add style and personality to your landscape by acting as boundaries, dividers, or focal points for your yard.

Do you have a lot of erosion on your property? If your house is built on even a small slope, then your soil can shift and leave your foundation exposed.

Potential sinkhole sites and eroding topsoil are dangerous to your home’s structural integrity. Erosion can also create piles of dirt across your landscaping.

Choosing the Right Wall

Gravity walls

The most basic of retaining walls, the gravity retaining wall uses sheer weight and mass to hold the soil at bay. Since it’s mostly about weight, these retaining walls allow for the widest amount of variety when it comes to materials.

Bricks, pavers, and unmortared stone are just a few options available, and dry-stacked stone is a very popular choice.

A “gravity wall” relies on the downward force of the earth around it to keep it from sliding.

Cantilevered

Cantilevered retaining walls don’t sit on the ground, but rather project out into open space over a cliff or other structure that they’re holding back. They must be built with strong structural support to avoid falling down or collapsing.

Sometimes called a reinforced retaining wall from the steel bars that run through the concrete or masonry retaining wall, the cantilevered retaining walls make use of a retaining wall affixed to a slab foundation that goes under the soil the wall is supporting in an “L” shape.

Sheet Piling

A very basic kind of wall usually used when space is an issue, a sheet pile retaining wall is a thin wall of steel, wood, or vinyl that is driven directly into the soil.

Often these have a vertically corrugated structure to provide additional reinforcement. These pilings only work in softer soils.

And a good rule of thumb is that you have to get one-third of the sheet piling driven into the ground for every two-thirds that will be above it.

Anchored

An anchored retaining wall allows for a variety of “fronts” of retaining walls to be supported by anchors driven into the earth behind them and attached by cables or strips.

These anchors are usually mechanically driven into the ground and their ends expanded by injecting pressurized concrete or mechanical means.

You can use this method to provide additional support to any of the above options and is often used for structurally thinner walls or where higher loads are expected

Benefits of Retaining Walls

Prevent Flood Control

With the right retaining walls, you can protect your home and property from the damage that flooding can cause.

Attractive Element

When most people think about retaining walls, they often think about concrete block walls. While this type of retaining wall is excellent, it isn’t always the most attractive option. However, there are actually many different materials you can use to have your retaining wall constructed, such as:

  • Boulders
  • Wood
  • Concrete
  • Gabion
  • Bricks
  • Concrete blocks

Our experts can help you choose the best option for your project.

Solid Property Boundary Maker

There are times where you need a clear boundary between your property and that of your neighbors, and sometimes, a simple fence is not enough. Maybe they are encroaching in your yard, or maybe you have people climbing your fence to pass through.

Slow down Soil Erosion

Between the wind, flash floods, and neighbors who overwater their lawns so that the excess spills over onto your landscaping, you can have a lot of soil erosion.

Reduce Potential Damage and Maintenance

A retaining wall can help reduce the damage that flash floods and soil erosion can cause.

This prevention can look like preventing a flash flood from ravaging your landscaping and flooding your basement or stopping soil from sliding down and filling your lawn with silty soil.

Retaining Walls – Cost

The cost to repair a residential retaining wall is determined by the square foot for materials and labor. Depending on the location and needs of the property, pricing can range from $10-$30+ per square foot or more.

Steps and Design Options

Retaining walls do a lot more than simply “retain”. They’re also major site features. Large retaining walls are a big part of creating a visual aesthetic.

In addition to controlling soil movement and protecting the environment, they provide many interesting design choices for creating a fabulous landscape.

Good stone, for example, creates an instant range of choices for landscape features, gardens, and surrounding grounds.

You can build in steps to deal with access problems or use the retaining wall as a backdrop for your garden. You can also use the retaining walls as the foundations for your trellises, or other high-value garden assets.
